WHY NOT TRY TO MAKE VALENTINE’S THE BEST EVER THIS YEAR BY DOING SOMETHING JUST A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT…
TOP 10 THINGS TO DO
1- HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL Great fun for all of the family. From 7-10 February, at the Omni Aviation Complex, Clark Field, Pampanga.
2- FIREFLY RIVER TOUR In Donsol, Sorsogon, this is the number two attraction after the whale sharks, and it’s perfect for a romantic night-time sojourn. Firefl ies brighten up the thicket of mangroves along the river. Boat rental is PHP1,250/ USD30.61, contact the DOT Region V, tel (052) 4820712, www.wowbicol.com.
3 - AIRBORNE PROPOSAL The stuff that movies are made of. And yes, some
guys have gone out of their way to propose high above. From a Cebu Pacificflight to a parasail ride at Shangri-la’s Mactan Island resort, popping the question high up in the clouds is one sure way to feel in heaven.
4 - LA MESA ECO PARK IN QUEZON CITY The park in the northeastern part of the city is one of Manila’s few green lungs. It has long tree-sheltered footpaths where couples can enjoy a quiet, leisurely stroll. Bikes are also available for rent for PHP50/ USD1.22. Open 8am to 5pm.
5- FLOWERS Say it with flowers.
Freshly picked, from your local store, or online, you just can’t go wrong.
6 - ROMANTIC DINNER… FOR THE VERY WEALTHY If you’re in the Lion City of Singapore from 9-16 February, here’s an example of what money can buy. The Cliff restaurant in Sentosa Resort and Spa is hosting a Diamond Valentine special at The Cliff Gazebo. For a mere SGD10,000 (PHP285,530/USD6,995) per couple you get everything from a limo transfer, two bottles of champers, a diamond accessory worth SG$5,000 (PHP142,765/ USD3,497), a night in the Garden Villa… and much, much more.

HUGGING THE WORLD
AGNES PRIETO ON THE JOYS OF HUGGING.
Pinoys are best known for their warmth and smiles. However, while friends and acquaintances will usually greet each other with a beso-beso (kiss kiss), a little buss on the cheek or an air kiss, hugging is normally just for very close friends and family. Last July’s Free Hugs Day in Manila was a surprise, a spontaneous combustion of connectivity among total strangers.
Everyone needs a hug.
Psychologists say normal adults need four hugs a day for emotional health. Growing kids need eight hugs. Infants and toddlers need a loving touch as much as they need food and water according to therapist Virginia Satir.
This need to connect on a deeply human level has taken on the proportions of an international movement. Two separate initiatives, one by Juan Mann with his Hugs Campaign and Free Hugs by Jason Hunter, have set people all over the world on a hugging frenzy.
Police interventions in places like Australia have been overcome by petitions from countless signatories. Certain cities require a permit for public gathering, but the acceptance has far outweighed the limitations.
Walls and boundaries between people are vanishing in cyberspace and world hugging could be the next step to express that we are one with everyone in the deepest sense. “Alone we can’t change the world,”
Mann says, “but together we can make a difference, one stranger, one smile, one hug at a time.”
