ISABEL ROCES HAS graced numerous runways, glossies and TV commercials in the Philippines, Cambodia, Croatia, Africa, India and Russia. She is also the picture of vegetarian health and an avid supporter of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She has heated up the vegan scene with ad campaigns in which she wears nothing but cabbage leaves or chilli peppers. Here, she shares why she’s an animal lover at heart.
What inspired you to go vegan?
Growing up, we had dogs and parrots that would eat, sleep and play with us all the time. I’ve experienced helping to hatch baby parrots and raising puppies. This exposure to animals made me very sympathetic to them. My mom was the first to make the leap and it gave me the courage to do the same. It was the most natural thing to do.
What is the biggest misconception about being a vegetarian?
That it is a miserable choice-less and protein-less life. It’s not. Most restaurants have at least one vegetarian option, and they’ll be more than happy to “veganize” other items on the menu! In groceries, you can get egg-free mayonnaise, dairy-free cheese, and even fake tuna! And vegetable protein is actually superior to animal protein, because it doesn’t have the saturated fat, cholesterol, and antibiotics found in meat and other animal products. The strongest animals on the planet are elephants and gorillas, and they’re vegetarian.
How did you get involved with PETA?
When PETA opened office in Manila, they heard about my efforts and asked me to join them and help promote vegetarianism. I’ve been with them for four years now.
From all the countries you’ve been to, what is the world’s most pet-friendly place?
I must say Australia. All their parks are open to animals. They have big fields where dogs are allowed to roam without leashes. Owners can bring them there to socialize with other dogs and play frisbee. Many responsible pet owners there pick up after their dogs.
How do you spend your free time?
I do Iyengar yoga to de-stress. For long weekends, I always plan to take an outof-town trip.
