where’s the party?
NADINE MADARANG HAS THE LOWDOWN ON MANILA’S MOST HAPPENING NIGHTSPOTS – AND WHO LIKES TO PARTY THERE
1 EMBASSYt
Hands down, this is the country’s number one party destination.
The superclub – which now boasts a new wing – features a grand lobby bedecked in chandeliers and flat screen monitors, a mezzanine area with VIP lounge, and dance floors on the third storey. The Embassy Mainroom plays melodic house music. The Embassy Fly Room plays a bit of everything: R&B, hip-hop, retro, house, pop, and rock. For a more relaxing trip, the Dragon Room plays lounge chill out tracks and slow jams. Try the lychee martini, ginger martini, or watermelon sake at PHP200 per glass. 2 ALCHEMY
With its three floors and three rooms - the O Lounge, Liquid Room, and Vapor Room, Alchemy’s unique concept has inspired other clubs to follow suit. The rooms allow fickle people to decide where they’d like to party, and to what kind of music. Local and international DJs play everything from Euro to trance, hip-hop to techno tracks. There are two massive dance floors, trance-inducing laser lights and five bars serving up special cocktails.
Try the Alchemist, a frozen smoothie spiked with liquor. Silver City Mall, Frontera Verde Drive corner Julia Vargas Avenue, Pasig, tel: +63 2 706 1305 and +63917 886 1049; www.alchemy.ph Party vibe “The crowd is good, the security is good. Plus, it’s not too crowded,” says Rico Barrera from Pinoy Big Brother.
3 FIAMA
With its Zen-inspired outdoor garden, Fiama offers a more chill atmosphere, all the better to meet new people. Though it has a reputation for being pompous and uppity, people are actually friendly and warm. Survey the place and it seems as if everyone knows everyone else – the vibe is just light and positive. Don’t be surprised if a stranger pulls you to dance. Guests rave about Fiama’s watermelon martinis, so let them fuel you as you shake up or stir the dance floor.

4 TEMPLE BAR AND RESTAURANT
Bona fide bar hoppers come to worship at Temple Bar. Owned by Erik Cua – co-owner of Embassy – it delivers that same crazy, fun vibe.
Although smaller, Temple has a special feature: a 20-foot gold icon of the Big Buddha standing above the bar area. Come on Friday nights for Jive Fridays and try a Weng Weng, Mojito or a Kamikaze, priced from PHP150 to PHP300. 1st Level, Greenbelt 2, Estrella Street, Ayala Center, Makati City, tel: +63 2 757 4813/ 757 5113. 5 CLUB ASCEND
Its towering structure and outdoor patio overlooking Bonifacio High Street help Ascend live up to is name. The hot spot literally gives its crowd a natural high. Clubbers hop from one dance floor to another, depending on the vibe and the music they want to groove to: house, hip-hop, or R&B. A key highlight is undoubtedly the VVIP lounge, called SYKE, on the third floor. Exclusivity is taken very seriously, so only members and special invited guests get in. The club’s most popular drink, Ascend 360 is a mix of orange, pineapple and mango juice with enough vodka to make your head spin.
