THE SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES WINNER SHARES HIS SUMMER MUST-HAVES WITH MONICA BARRETTO

LIVING ON AN ISLAND
for more than 30 days is no vacation when you are deprived of basic necessities and must face tough challenges. But JC Tiuseco’s experience on the Philippine version of reality show Survivor only brought out the best in the 22-year-old basketball player from San Sebastian College. Beating out 17 other contestants to bag the PHP3 million prize, JC won the title of first-ever Pinoy Sole Survivor. Here, we chat with this charming hottie and discover not just what makes him tick, but also what’s on his summer hit list.

Can you tell us what you will always remember about your experience on Survivor?
Every moment was very memorable for me because being on the show was truly an experience like no other.

I would love to do Survivor again, given the chance.

What for you were the best and worst things about doing the show?
For me, the best thing was that I learned to really appreciate the small, everyday things in life that I take for granted. The show taught me to be content and satisfied with what I have and to be thankful for the people around me, flaws and all. Survivor can bring out the best or the worst in you; it’s your choice whether you want to be good or bad. In such a game, it’s hard to pretend. Eventually, circumstances draw out the real you — who you really are.

What did you do with the prize money?
I gave half of the cash to my parents and the other half, I put in the bank.

Do you have any plans for the summer?
I’m looking forward to going to Boracay with friends.

What will you take along?
Sunblock, boardshorts, shades, hot weather clothes and Havaianas!

What’s your dream destination?
Palawan! I’ve never been there. I hear it’s popular for its white beaches and clean waters. My favorite summer memory is seeing the whale sharks in Sorsogon.

Tell us what’s on your summer playlist…
I’m Yours and I Melt With You by Jason Mraz, and Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel. These songs are memorable and perfect for the beach.

So, what’s your advice to people who are stranded on a deserted island?
Make sure you have a flint to start a fire, a poncho, a bolo, a medicine kit and a big tarpaulin to serve as a roof for the shelter you build.

Messy Bessy
What it is A line of cleaning products made of safe, natural and biodegradable ingredients. “Filipinos are exposed to ads that emphasize killing more than 99% of germs, or equating cleanliness with sudsiness or a particular scent. But our research shows that these aren’t all necessarily true,” says Krie Reyes Lopez, one of the brand’s founders.

Why it rocks Aside from all-purpose disinfectants, cleaners and deodorizers in scents like orange, eucalyptus and jasmine, watch for Messy Bessy’s new coconut-based and lavender-infused powder detergent. “We’re also working on a lab-tested nontoxic insect repellant, among others. Our goal is to be able to clean an entire home with only Messy Bessy products.”

Get involved Each time you buy a Messy Bessy product, you support the young adults who make them.

A NO-SWEAT WORKOUT

Try aqua aerobics! It gives you an excuse to exercise in your swimsuit. Sharon Caoili, a Manila-based instructor at Aqualogic Swim Company, gives us the reasons to jump in.

It won’t bore you. “Some students like the idea of a new environment,” says Sharon. “There are only few routines in aqua aerobics, but with repetition, choreography, and changes in intensity and the unpredictable movement of water, each class always feels new and challenging.”

Swimming is optional. Participants do not actually need to know how to swim. The buoyancy present in water provides the resistance for every single move — even merely standing requires some exertion.

It’s water therapy. “Some say they feel de-stressed, less anxious, more energetic and alert after each class,” Sharon puts in.

Anyone can do it. It accomodates those with special needs. There are pre- and post-natal classes, post-rehabilitation after injury as well as conditioning classes and mobility classes for seniors. Log on to www.aqualogicswimco.com
