DEEJAY JOROLAN TALKS TO WOLFGANG’S ROCKING LEAD SINGER ABOUT REUNIONS, VILLAINS AND AMERICAN IDOL
How is everyone getting along after the six year hiatus from Wolfgang?
The dynamic has never been better. I think us maturing has a lot to do with that, although we almost always did have sensible heads on our shoulders. The fact that we aren’t in the same space constantly makes us enjoy the time we have together more. Francis Aquino, our new drummer, is a breeze to work with. What’s your favorite track on Villains, your fabulous sixth album? RP Deathsquad. It was the song that started all of this. It sounded so good that it sparked a creative surge that eventually became an entire album.
Why did you write just one Tagalog song (Kung Gusto Mo Pa) on the album?
When I write in Tagalog, it usually doesn’t come out according to plan. Let’s say, it isn’t my first language when I write. Tagalog is usually the department of Mon (Legaspi, Wolfgang’s bass player). Tell us your plans for Semenelin Music, your indie record label… We’re looking at making it a hub for all our material. I want to have great talent on the site and help spread their music without owning their songs. I think artists should own their compositions because they put the hard work into creating them.
Speaking of great talent, what do you really think of American Idol?
The show offers a lot of people a way to reach a certain level of popularity. But there is no time spent on nurturing the careers of the “stars” they create. As quickly as they generate stardom for these people, they get thrown into the meat grinder.
So what’s next after Villains?
Alive 2007, an album with our brothers-in-arms, Razorback, is also out in stores in July. It features live recordings of our landmark reunion concert at the Music Museum. But our biggest goal now is to develop our website so we can reach anyone, anywhere in the world instantly. Log on to http://wolfgangphilippines. multiply.com/ and the official Wolfgang Facebook page for updates.
