AMERICA’S QUIRKY SWEETHEART AND STAR OF WHIP IT! TALKS TO BRET LOVE ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
FEW ACTORS ACHIEVE success as early in life
as Drew Barrymore, but even fewer manage to
battle back from the brink of burnout to become
one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars. We sat
down with the irrepressibly upbeat actress (who
also directed and produced her latest film, Whip
It!, out in theaters next month in Manila) to discuss
everything including finding love in the 21st century.
How did you live out the missteps of your childhood?
I believe you can be the person you dream of being. I realized that I had to overcome the trials and tribulations of my life. The fact is that everything in life actually is a choice, so I just chose to get my life back on track and go for happiness.
Are you aware you’re a role model?
I don’t sit and think, “I’m a role model,” because there’s a certain level of ego in that. But I do love open dialogue, honesty and truth. The people that inspire me, they’re mortal. If they have the power to influence and inspire, then I think everyone has that capacity.
Does wanting to be a positive influence affect how you choose your projects?
No, because that would make me contrived and there’s no truthfulness in that. As a producer I’m into positive messages, but as an actress, I want to explore other things.
What can you say to young actresses?
The most important thing is just to remain sane. Getting to do what you’re doing for a living is one of the greatest dreams. But you need to travel out of this town to see a more universal picture of the world. Be good to yourself and to those around you.
How do you maintain a healthy love life?
Well, I’m a workaholic and I travel all the time. Not having a routine can be very trying on a relationship, but I love my job. I try to be more rational than emotional. You choose to be this person. You choose to have this life. So I celebrate these choices instead of letting them bring us down.
Are you interested in settling down?
I’m not ready to have a family, and I’m not ready to get married. My head is so not in that place. It’s more about enjoying life, having fun, working and spending time with my friends. Those are my priorities.
