TIM TAYAG SHARES WHERE HE GETS THE ULTIMATE TECH BARGAINS IN MANILA — NO KIDDING!
HARD DRIVES AND MEDIA PLAYERS
I’ve stopped buying pirated DVDs because they always stop somewhere close to the ending. Did Rambo die?
Did Harry Potter survive wizard puberty? So now I’ve discovered the media player — a device that can play mp4, avi, HD and pretty much any video format you feed it (except for VHS and Betamax). All you need is a 1TB hard drive to hold a year’s worth of movies. Head to the third floor of Greenhills Virra Mall and compare prices among the stores. The further inside you go, the cheaper they get. Last time I checked, the media player cost around PHP5,000 and the 1TB hard drive was also PHP5,000 — popcorn not included. www.. greenhills.com.ph/virramall.asp
CARS
Once you drive a brand new car off the dealer’s parking lot, it depreciates in value even if your attractiveness appreciates. My advice: buy pre-owned from a car company executive; it is still considered new by the bank because the mileage is so low. Imagine: a new vehicle at the price of a pre-owned one. As Miley Cyrus would say, you get the best of both worlds.
CAMERAS
I’ve bought five cameras from Mayer Photo because they have the cheapest models, especially DSLR. The only drawbacks are: (a) they’re located in Quiapo and (b) the owner is not the friendliest when you push for a further price reduction. But if you know the model you want, call Mayer, tel: +63 (2) 733 7598/733 7722. He has a delivery boy, but if you want to make the trip, head to 310 P Gomez St, Quiapo, Manila
MAC COMPUTERS
Indians know a good deal when they see one. Personally, Kajal, my Indian Macintosh supplier, is unrivaled in terms of price and service. I’ve bought laptops, desktops, and iPods from her home/office which has a statue of Vishnu outside as if telling each client, “Once you go Mac, you’ll never go back.” Because I’m such a good customer and I’ve referred all my family and friends, she gives me good terms and delivers straight to my house. She also accepts trade-ins of your old Macintosh machines, but not your Commodore 32kb. Tel: +63 (2) 852 2554/852-5223 (ask for Kajal or Marcy)
